FAO discusses its role in Azerbaijan achieving Strategic Roadmap goals

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.28

By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

Projects of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Azerbaijan contribute to the achievement of the goals and objectives of sustainable development within the country's Strategic Road Maps, a source in the FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in the country told Trend on Dec.28.

According to the organization’s representative, in 2020, via the technical cooperation program, through its internal resources, as well as funds from the Global Environment Facility, the Green Climate Fund, the European Union, and other investors, the FAO continued to implement various projects in the fields of crop and livestock production, food security, forestry economy, and fishing and other areas.

"Currently, seven projects are underway in these areas," the source said.

It was noted that the FAO has been fruitfully cooperating with Azerbaijan for over 20 years.

"In 2015, the FAO Partnership and Liaison Office was opened in Azerbaijan, and a Cooperation Program for a period of five years was signed with the government of the country, on the basis of which it was planned to allocate $10 million for funding agricultural development projects," the source pointed out

The framework program of cooperation between the government of Azerbaijan and the FAO, covering 2016-2020, envisaged the implementation of various measures and projects to ensure sustainable development of agriculture and food stability in the country and support the development of 6 priority sectors in the field of forestry and fish farming, the source also noted.

"Our main goal is to ensure the country's food security, reduce dependence on imports of agricultural products, stimulate exports, as well as more efficient use of natural resources," the FAO said.

Summing up the results of projects of the current Partnership Program, which ends in 2020, the FAO said that within this program, most of the goals were achieved.

In November 2016, the FAO and the Azerbaijani government signed the Partnership Program for 2016-2020. Azerbaijan has been a member of the FAO since 1995.
