Demiryollary (railways) open joint stock company has been created in Turkmenistan, which has been entrusted with the functions of technical maintenance of railways and transport, and transporting passengers and goods, Trend reports referring to the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper.
Along with the Turkmendemiryollary (Turkmen Railways) agency, the Transport and Logistics Center of Turkmenistan and the Altyn Asyr closed joint-stock company acted as founders of the newly established company.
The structure of Demiryollary includes locomotive and railcar depots, railway stations, construction and installation subdivisions, specialized communications and power supply facilities, Kerven and Turkmenbashi hotels in Avaza resort town.
At the same time, it is reported that the Turkmendemiryollary state agency, which operates under the Turkmen Ministry of Industry and Communications, retained ownership and control over the railway network, civil facilities, educational institutions, as well as a design and research institute.
The newspaper features commentary of Demiryollary Deputy Director General Mekan Dadyev. Dadyev noted that the creation of an open joint-stock company will allow attracting private capital in this area and help reduce government subsidies.
Turkmenistan’s potential in the logistics of transit flows should be assessed taking into account the recently commissioned Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran and the Kerki-Ymamnazar (Turkmenistan) -Aqina (Afghanistan) railways, which is the first stage of the Asian International Railway Transport Corridor.
