Iranian scientists have cultivated 70 tons of microalgae as part of a pilot project.

The project will focus on microalgae's use as biofuel and for producing a substance used in anti-cancer medications, Mehr news agency reported on Sunday.

Its diverse applications ranging from biofuel to producing oxygen and using carbon dioxide to grow, as well as its nutritional properties have made microalgae's production important.

In an earlier pilot project, the Iranian Research Organization for Science & Technology (IROST) started to produce byproducts from microalgae in 11 pools on a chain of small islands in the Persian Gulf Bushehr Province.
