Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia close to operational phase in synchronization of electricity network

In the next several months, the study phase of a synchronization project (connecting electricity networks) between Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, will be completed and the operational phase will kick in, said Iran's Minister of Energy, Reza Ardakanian said, Trend reports via IRNA.

"Iran's electricity grid has two routes, one through the Republic of Azerbaijan and one through Georgia, to get synchronized with the electricity grid of Russia,” Ardakanian said.

The Minister of Energy said that Iran, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Russia, have agreed that an Iranian engineering company should be responsible for synchronization project.

"Connecting the electricity systems of Iran, Russia and the Republic of Azerbaijan is of very important and necessary project," said Ardakanian.

In 2018 Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran created a working group to flesh out details on ways to synchronize their energy systems.

On August 12 2019, Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran signed an agreement on joint development of a feasibility study of a project to create the North-South power corridor between the power systems of the three countries.

The work group includes 18 people (six from each side). It is tasked with preparing a feasibility study of integrating the power systems of the three countries.
