In January-August 2011, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with 146 countries comprised $23.661 billion or an increase of 31.66 percent compared to January-August 2010. The amount of export increased by 27.59% as compared to last year and comprised $17.798bln, while import increased 45.76%, totaling $5.863bln.
Azerbaijan exported 1,751 types of goods and imported 5,657 types of goods. During the reported period, the indicator of export exceeded the indicator of import and thus, the black ink of import-export operations amounted to $11.935bln.
Like previous years, the main item of Azerbaijan's export was oil and oil products.

Most of the exports of Azerbaijan or 86.78 percent in the eight months accounted for the export of crude oil. In January-August, was exported crude oil worth $15.444 billion, exceeding the figure for the same period last year by 28.13 percent.
During the reporting period, oil products were exported in amount of $951.33 million (an increase of the year at 12.81 percent), accounting for 5.35 percent of total exports.
In January-August, Azerbaijan exported chemical products in amount of $70.558 million, exceeding the same period last year by 2.18 times and 0.4 percent of total exports.

In this period, the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during the reported period Azerbaijan exported commodities to Italy totaling $6.767bln which makes up 38% of total exports. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Italy is followed by France ($2.781bln) and USA ($0.979bln). Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.
The traditional domination of three countries in import seems to be as: Russia ($1.085.4bln), Turkey ($789.3mln) and Germany ($478.6mln).
Most of Azerbaijan's imports or 32.34 percent in the first eight months accounted for the imports of machines, equipment, electric vehicles and their spare parts. In January-August, the machinery and equipment import amounted to $1.66 billion, exceeding the figure for in the same period of the last year by 83.9 percent.
Also the country imported vehicles and spare parts amounting to $839.72 million with a growth of 58.63 percent and the share of total imports - 14.32 percent.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in January-August amounted to $3.957.92 billion (16.7 percent of trade turnover with CIS countries). Exports to CIS countries for the period totaled $2.285.4 billion (12.84 percent of total exports) and imports - $1.672.6 billion (28.53 percent of total imports). Thus, the black ink of import-export operations with CIS countries amounted to $612.74mln.
In total, 6,350 legal entities (3,294) and physical entities (3,056) participated in the foreign trade operations.
The share of public sector in exports made up $17.003bln, private sector held $0.701bln. The share of export operations by physical entities comprised $94.48mln.
In the import operations, $2.09 billion accounted for the public sector, $3.49 billion - private and $279.48 million - the share of individuals.
