Prices and situation in consumer market in Azerbaijan (January-April 2012)

The Azerbaijani consumer market is developing rapidly (9-10 percent of the annual growth). The retail trade facilities, catering trade points form the basis of this growth. They are developing in the country both qualitatively and quantitatively.

According to the State Statistics Committee, in Jan.-April 2012, the Azerbaijani trading networks sold consumer goods to the population at 5.343.8 billion manat, which is 9.1 percent more than in Jan.-April 2011. Legal entities and individual enterpreneurs ensured 46.0 percent of trade turnover, fairs and markets - 41.5 percent.

The share of private sector in the retail trade turnover amounted to 99.5 percent. The population bought consumer goods worth 5.315.6 billion manat from the enterprises in January-April, or 9.2 percent more than in the same month of last year.

During the reported period, every citizen of the country acquired consumer goods at 146 manat that is 14.2 percent more than in Jan.-April 2011. This stipulates the purchasing capacity of citizens.

The Azerbaijani retail trade facilities sold food worth 3.100.8 billion manat with an increase of 1.3 percent and the share of 58.0 percent and non-food goods worth 2.243.0 billion with a growth of 22.9 percent and the share of 42.0 percent to the population.

Paid services worth 1.668.2 billion manat were rendered to the population during the period, or 8.7 percent more compared to January-April 2011. Legal entities ensured 72.8 percent of this growth and rendered the services worth 1.292.0 billion manat.

In January-April 2012, each citizen acquired paid services worth 45.6 manat, or 3.9 manat more than in January-April 2011. Transportation, public utilities and communication services prevail in the structure of paid services.

Prices

Deflation was fixed in Azerbaijan in April.

In Jan.-April 2012, the prices on consumer goods and tariffs for services decreased by 0.4 percent compared to the previous month, and increased by 2.7 percent compared to Jan.-April 2011 (data from the State Statistics Committee).

Food prices increased by 3.5 percent, nonfood goods - by 1.3 percent, and tariffs for services - by 2.1 percent compared to Jan.-April 2011.

Food prices decreased by 0.0 percent in April 2012 compared to March 2012, nonfood goods and tariffs for services remained at the same level.

In April, the prices on flour, semolina and buckwheat, pasta, bread, beef, chicken and fish, unpasteurized milk, eggs, sunflower and olive oil, sugar and granulated sugar, lemons, oranges, apples, pears, chestnuts, walnuts and hazelnuts, greens, tomatoes and cucumbers, garlic, mushrooms, onions and potatoes decreased.

The prices on lamb, sausage, pasteurized milk, corn oil, tangerines, bananas, beets, carrots increased during April.

In April, production prices on agricultural products decreased by 1.5 percent in Azerbaijan compared to the previous month.

In April, the prices on annual plants declined by 2.7 percent, perennial plants - 0.4 percent. The prices on wheat fell by 0.6 percent, greens - 11.9 percent, cucumbers - 13.3 percent, onions - 1.1 percent, green onion - 3.4 percent, potatoes - 5.9 percent , dry grass - 4.3 percent.

Production prices on cabbage increased by 2.8 percent, tomatoes - 0.6 percent and clover - 0.2 percent.

The production prices on apples decreased by 0.7 percent, lemons - 3.7 percent, hazelnuts - 1.8 percent, chestnut - 3 percent, nuts - 0.3 percent.

Production prices on livestock products in April fell by 0.7 percent compared to the previous month, including cows - by 0.9 percent, beef and mutton (live weight) - 0.5 percent and 0 1 percent, respectively, buffalo and cow milk - by 0.2 percent, eggs - 11.5 percent, pure honey - 2.1 percent.

Prices on live sheep and goats increased by one percent, poultry (live weight) - 3.3 percent.

In April, the prices on fish and fish products cheapened by 0.5 percent, firewood - 12.6 percent.

In April 2012, the base index of the consumer prices, excluding goods and services, subjected to seasonal changes (fruits and vegetable) and the prices being regulated by the government cheapened by 0.3 percent compared to the previous month and increased by 2.4 percent compared to Jan.-April 2011.

According to the forecasts of international financial organizations, single valued inflation is expected to remain in Azerbaijan in 2012. According to the latest report of the International Monetary Fund, in 2012 the average annual inflation rate in Azerbaijan is projected at 5.6 percent. According to the IMF report, the average annual inflation in the CIS in 2012 will amount to 7.1 percent, in developing countries - 6.2 percent. The projected inflation rate in Azerbaijan is 1.5 and 0.6 percent less than in the two groups.

In April 2012, the index of industrial production prices decreased by 3.6 percent compared to the previous month. The prices increased by 15.2 percent compared to Jan.-April 2011. Prices decreased by 4.5 percent in the oil and gas production compared to the previous month, but increased by 17.4 percent compared to Jan.-April 2011.

In the processing of chemical products, prices increased by 4.7 percent during the month, but increased by 7.0 percent per annum. In April 2012, the prices in metallurgy increased by 1.4 percent compared to the previous month, and increased by 10.3 percent during the year. In April, prices on electricity, gas and water increased by 0.2 percent compared to the previous month and decreased by 0.1 percent per annum.

In April the index of producer prices in manufacturing industry hit 101.1 percent. The prices in the machinery and equipment production increased by 7.4 percent, wood processing and wood product manufacturing - remained at the same level, clothing - increased by 0.4 percent, production of rubber and plastic goods - decreased by 0.1 percent.

Prices in the food industry dropped by 2.1 percent, electrical equipment - by 1.1 percent, leather, leather products and footwear - 0.8 percent.

The tariffs for transportation of goods by the transport sector increased by 4.5 percent in Azerbaijan in April compared to March. The tariffs for passenger transportation decreased by 0.4 percent in April.

Last month, the average tariffs for transporting 10 tons of cargo per kilometer, exported from the country by the railway fell by 4.6 percent. The tariffs on goods imported into the country by railway, transit goods and goods transported within the country increased respectively by 3.9, 0.3 and one percent.

As of April, the tariffs on international transportation of passengers by railway transport decreased by 13.4 percent.

The tariffs for transportation of one ton of cargo by air in the CIS countries increased by 0.1 percent in April. The tariffs on passenger transportation by air to non-CIS countries fell by 0.2 percent and increased by 13.3 percent to the CIS countries.

Cargo transportation by sea during this period increased by 5.4 percent.

In April, tariffs on oil transportation via pipelines increased by 7.2 percent compared to March.
