Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini said the strengthening of relations between Israel and the European Union, the Jerusalem Post reported.
"The development of relations between Europe and Israel can not stop, because Europe has an important role in the Middle East, "- said Frattini at a joint press conference in Rome with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
Statements by Italian Foreign Ministers followed after the EU Commissioner for Foreign Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner, who told reporters in Brussels that if Israel does not take a position on the peace process with the Palestinians, it will lead to deterioration in relations with the EU, the Jerusalem Post wrote.
At the meeting with Frattini Lieberman said that "the main problem in the Middle East is that Iran's nuclear program, which destabilizes the situation in the region and the world."
With regard to a truce with the Palestinians, Lieberman said that "the Israeli government seeks to concrete results in the negotiations, rather than the empty slogans and declarations."
Israeli Foreign Minister added that Benjamin Netanyahu declared Israel's plans in the peace process after meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington in mid-May.
As part of the European tour Lieberman as head of the MFA will also visit Paris, Berlin and Prague
