Azerbaijan`s President Ilham Aliyev has today viewed "Goytapa" archaeological monument of Neolithic Age as part of his visit to Tovuz.
The Head of State was informed that the monument is the largest ancient settlement of Neolithic Age in the South Caucasus (sixth millennium B.C.). It covers the total area of two hectares.
President Ilham Aliyev toured the area of the archaeological monument. He was told that archaeological excavations had been carried out here with participation of representatives of the French National Research Center and University of Tokyo since 2008.
The Head of State viewed stone and bone tools which were discovered in the ancient settlement.

The presentation of the monument was held at the University of Tokyo in 2009, at the British Museum and at "College de France" in 2010, at the Russian Academy of Sciences Archaeology Institute and Georgian Museum of Natural History in 2011. Young archaeologists` summer school was organized at the monument last year as part of "Ancient cultures of the South Caucasus" project.
Under the 2010-2014 State Program on development of tourism in Azerbaijan the monument`s area will be redeveloped.
An open-air archeopark will be created at the monument`s area in accordance with a grant project of the Science Development Fund under the President of Azerbaijan.
