UNICEF, Azerbaijani Special Olympic Committee to help handicapped children (PHOTO)

UNICEF and the Special Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan (SOCA) have signed a memorandum of understanding in the joint creation of opportunities for children with disabilities and assistance in identifying their sporting potential.

UNICEF and the Special Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan (SOCA) have signed a memorandum of understanding in the joint creation of opportunities for children with disabilities and assistance in identifying their sporting potential.

On Friday at an event held at the press center of the Trend international news agency, the head of UNICEF in Azerbaijan, Mark Hereward, said the parties begin formal cooperation. It will help children with disabilities have equal opportunities with their peers.

Hereward said children with disabilities are entitled to receive adequate medical care, quality education, to live in an environment protected from the disease.

SOCA President Shahin Aliyev said that Azerbaijan was involved in a special Olympic movement a decade ago. Since 1990, it worked in the Special Olympic Committee of the USSR. After the restoration of Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, SOC was formed. Since 2007, SOCA began working closely with UNICEF.
