Outcome of Iran-Spain deal depends on how the upcoming "Iran-Six powers" talks will go, EU economic advisor Mehrdad Emadi told Trend.
Mehr agency reported yesterday that Iran and an oil company from Spain signed a 1.6 billion euro contract for financing the manufacture of some oil industry-related parts and equipment.
Within the framework of the contract, Iran was in debt to Spain because of the sanctions, so the oil contract was signed to pay off the debt via oil exports to European country.
The contract itself has been freezed by the EU, and according to Emadi, if the upcoming "Iran-Six powers" talks are successful, EU will overlook the deal between Iran and Spain. However, if the talks fail, EU will not allow Iran and Spain to finish the deal.
Iran and the P5+1 (Britain, France, Russia, China and the United States plus Germany) wrapped up the latest round of their negotiations on April 14 in the Turkish city of Istanbul, and both sides hailed the multifaceted talks as constructive.
Iraq will host the next round of the talks on May 23.
"The contract was signed long before the imposed sanctions, however two months ago EU got worried about this Iran-Spain agreement, since from the juridical point of view, the deal had to be made.
Emadi added that the EU is concerned not only about such contracts or agreements that were signed before the sanctions were imposed, but also for those deals that would put European countries in debt before Iran.
The international community has imposed heavy sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program, which Iran says is peaceful.
