The United States Friday said it was "troubled" by the Egyptian top court ruling that declared invalid parliamentary elections and allowed Hosny Mubarak's last premier to compete in the presidential election run-off on Sunday.
"We're looking closely at the decisions that were made yesterday and their full implications," said US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, dpa reported.
She said it appeared the implications of the ruling were "not exactly clear to Egyptians themselves."
"If in fact the conclusion is that there need to be new parliamentary elections, our hope is that they could happen swiftly and that they reflect the will of the Egyptian people," she said.
Nuland said the United States was "troubled by this court ruling," but respected the independence of the Egyptian judiciary.
