NATO PA’s Workshop Starting in Baku Today

Azerbaijan, Baku, 5 March / Trend corr I. Alizade/ The 68th Rose-Roth workshop of NATO Parliamentary Assembly is going to start in Baku today.

The workshop will discuss security in the Caspian region and Central Asia, military and political situation, energy security and relationships between the West and Central Asia. Representatives from the international organizations and from over 25 countries cooperating with NATO will be in attendance.

Although Azerbaijan invited Armenia to the workshop, the country will not be represented because of the riots and emergency situation in Yerevan -emerging as a result of the presidential elections.

On 4 March, Lello arrived in Azerbaijan to participate in the workshop. He met with the Speaker of Azerbaijani Parliament Ogtay Asadov, the First Vice Speaker and the head of Azerbaijani delegation to NATO PA - Ziyafat Askarov, members of Parliament's standing committee for security and defence and various other political parties represented in the Parliament.

They discussed enhancement of cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO PA, and the various preparation carried out for the successful implementation of the workshop.

The workshop will end on 8 March.

Since 1994 Azerbaijani has been cooperating with NATO within the framework of Partnership for Peace program. In August 2005, the two sides signed the Working Plan on Individual Partnership, which is currently being implemented.

Azerbaijan has been the associate member in NATO PA since 2002.
