Big Amount of Drugs Withdrawn in North-Western of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Sheki, 23 June / corr. Trend E.Guliyev / Big amount of drugs was withdrawn in Sheki District, northwest Azerbaijan. A total of 7.360kg of marihuana was withdrawn from Alesker Ahmedov, 43, a resident of Sheki, as a result of joint actions of the Gakh District police and employees of the Interior Ministry's Western Regional Department for Drugs Enforcement on 22 June, at 2:00AM.

During the first quarter of 2008, the interior bodies withdrew more than 181kg drugs from illegal turnover (2.5 times more compared with the same period of 2007), prevented the attempt to transport 41.5kg of drugs (2.7 times more) to the country through contraband.

A total of 367 people (91.8%) of 400 charged with drugs crime, are able-bodied, however, they neither work, nor study, 101 (25.3%) former criminals, 7 (1.8%) women, 1 (0.3%) underaged.

Suit has been filed in accordance with Article 234.4 (manufacturing, use or storage, and production of drugs or psychotropic substances) of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code.

Sheki is located in 320km northwest of Baku.
