Azerbaijan, Baku, 5 September/ Trend , corr V. Zhavoronkova/ Any attempt to drive Ukraine to NATO by force will fail, Victor Yanukovich, leader of Party of Regions of Ukraine said.
"This should be decided by the Ukrainian people. The government that pursues a policy not reckoning with population is doomed to failure," he said.
It is the population who must make the final decision. We will demand President to discuss such decisions with people, he said.
The 59th meeting of NATO summit took place on 2 to 4 April in Bucharest where Council of the Organization decided to postpone Ukraine and Georgia's accession to MAP until December. Germany and France were among those states that did not support Ukraine and Georgia's accession to MAP. However, Angela Merkel said on 26 August that she insists on granting MAP to Georgia and Ukraine. The next NATO summit will be held in December 2008.
