Abkhazia Not Appealed for CIS Membership: Executive Committee

Azerbaijan, Baku, 8 September/ Trend , corr R. Novruzov/ Abkhazia has not appealed for CIS membership.

On 7 September, President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh announced Abkhazia and South Ossetia's plans to join CIS. "It is more likely to happen and we have already decided so. If CIS member states believe it to be possible, of course we (Abkhazia and South Ossetia) will join this organization," Abkhazian President said.

"CIS is open for any state and membership of a new state in the organization can be considered by the member states if a state will express its readiness," Sergey Suntsov, spokesman for Executive Committee of CIS said to Trend by telephone from Moscow.

"No official documents have been submitted to us from Abkhazia regarding CIS membership," representative of the Executive Committee said.

CIS has been founded in 1991 by Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Later it was joined by Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.
