Azerbaijan, Baku, 19 November /corr. Trend T.Jafarov / The Foreign Minister of Iran considers that if the new U.S. President Obama justifies the hopes of the American people, changes may take place in the foreign policy of this country.

"If Obama keeps his promises and justifies the hopes of the American people, it is possible to hope for serious and long-term changes," the Foreign Minister of Iran, Manouchehr Mottaki, said to press-conference in Tehran on 19 November.

Answering the question of Trend correspondent, Mottaki replied that if to focus attention on the pre-election situation in the USA, then it is possible to see reduction in the popularity of the U.S. position in the world.
It is also possible to suppose that the elections will serve the increase in the image of the USA in the world, he added.

The Minister said that the slogan of Obama, who calls to changes, became the basic reason for the selection of voters in his favor, and shows the desire of American people to restore the lost image. "Everybody is interested in one question - can he make these changes? Both Obama and his party take responsibility before the American community for the aforesaid," Mottaki said.

Touching upon the statement of Barack Obama regarding the readiness of the USA for co-operation with Iran, Mottaki said that these words of Obama were expressed within the election campaign. The Minister said that usually the candidates, leaders voice different thoughts during the presidency and after the completion of mission. Therefore, the Minister considers it needs to wait events after 20 January - Obama's coming to the post.

Speaking of the congratulatory message of the President of Iran Ahmadinejad to Obama, Mottaki noted that this was the possibility to express views and general position of official Teheran.
