Angola voted against the UN resolution on Azerbaijani occupied territories due to a misunderstanding of the situation, newly-appointed Angolan Ambassador to Azerbaijan Samuel Tito Armando said at a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, the Foreign Ministry reported.
Mammadyarov said he was surprised that Angola voted against the resolution in 2008.
"It cast a shadow on Angolan-Azerbaijani relations," he said.
The UN adopted a resolution supporting Azerbaijani territorial integrity in 2008.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
Armando said the Angolan president instructed him to enhance cooperation between the two countries.
The parties agreed to hold talks between their permanent representatives in international organizations.
The new ambassador gave his credentials to Mammadyarov.
