Russian border guards began to carry out their tasks in accordance with the signed agreements between Russia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the RIA Novosti quoted the official representative of the border guard directorate of the Russian Federal Security Service for the Southern Federal District Sergei Livantsov as saying.

"Border guards have begun to meet the challenges of border security in Abkhazia and South Ossetia," Livantsov said. However, he did not specify the number of border guards.

Nikolai Lisinski, chief of the Regional border department of the Federal Security Service, said that Russia's control over Ossetia-Georgian border section "would enhance the security, provide social and technical and cultural development and to improve life conditions in the border region".

The presence of border guards on the South Ossetia border is a "guarantee of stability and security in South Ossetia and in the Caucasus". Lisinki said that Alexander Murzin was appointed the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation to South Ossetia. The headquarters will be located in Tskhinvali.

A total of twenty military cities will be built in accordance with the plan of reconstruction of borders.

Lisinki said that the placement of Russian border guards in South Ossetia has no connection with the upcoming trainings of NATO in Georgia.
