In light of the recent developments in the North Caucasus region of Russia, protection of Azerbaijan's northern borders has been strengthened, said the Chief of the Azerbaijani State Border Service (SBS).
"The situation in the North Caucasus has been taken into account in the service-operational activities at the northern border. In this regard, the Supreme Commander of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces has given all necessary instructions and support. Some funds have been allocated, as well," SBS Chief, Lieutenant-General Elchin Guliyev told journalists on Aug. 18.
Recently, the North Caucasus region of Russia has experienced an unstable situation, including a number of terrorist attacks and assassinations.
Border guards detained 2,842 border violators and prevented narcotics smuggling in volume of 227 kilograms in January-July 2009. Some 668 wanted persons were arrested in the report period. Moreover, the border guards withdrew the smuggled goods worth 2.05 million manat.
Guliyev said Azerbaijan's northern borders are reliably protected. "Azerbaijani border guards are prepared for any situation and a professional protection has been implemented at a necessary level," the SBS chief said.
