Members of a new opposition party set up in Azerbaijan will participate in municipal elections independently.
"Our party has not passed state registration in the ministry of justice. So, each member of the party, willing to be elected to municipality, can nominate his candidature," chairman of Aydinlar party, Gulamhuseyn Alibayli, told Trend on August 27.
Azerbaijani municipal elections are scheduled for December 2009.
Number of municipalities was reduced from 2,757 to 1,766 in Azerbaijan.
Alibayli said that at present, candidates for municipalities are being determined in Baku and regions. "We have regional organizations in more than 30 regions. I think that members of our party will nominate their candidatures to municipalities in each of these regions," chairman of the party said.
The founding meeting of the Aydinlar party took place on Dec. 14., 2008. Alibayli was elected chairman.
Alibayli was an adviser to President Abulfaz Elchibay in 1992-1993. He was elected as a member of parliament for two consecutive terms from 1995-2005. He has also been a member of the Azerbaijani parliament's delegation to PACE. He has been a member of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party since 1989 and chairman of the Supreme Majlis of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) since 1993. In early August, Alibayli left the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party to found Aydinlar. The member of the APFP, Nizami Guliyev said he would resign from the party and join the Aydinlar Party.
