CE Commissioner for Human Rights to hold meetings in Russia

Council of Europe for Human Rights Commissioner, Thomas Hammarberg, is starting a week-long trip to Russia on September 3. He will visit the Chechen Republic and the Republic of Ingushetia, a CE press release said.

Council of Europe for Human Rights Commissioner, Thomas Hammarberg, is starting a week-long trip to Russia on September 3. He will visit the Chechen Republic and the Republic of Ingushetia, a CE press release said.

During the visit the Commissioner will meet with senior representatives of federal and republican authorities, ombudsmen, and representatives of civil society.

Discussions will focus on the human rights situation in these republics amid recent events. The Commissioner intends to raise the question of investigating the recent murder of human rights defenders.

He will also summarize the points of other unsolved issues on human rights in the Northern Caucasus within a framework of lasting dialogue with the authorities.

Hammarberg is also planning to speak at the round table in St. Petersburg which the Council of Europe has organized. Russian federal and regional ombudsmen will attend the meeting.
