President of Georgia awards Lithuanian ex-president with highest reward

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili awarded Lithuanian ex-president Vytautas Landsbergis with Georgia's highest reward of Holy George. "This person was a hero of my youth and the man who participated in the fight for Lithuanian and our Georgia's independence," Saakashvili said while delivering the reward.

He stressed that the strongest national-liberation movements took place in Lithuania and Georgia late 1980 of the last century. "That time I studied in Kiev. I told everybody with pride that my compatriots like heroes combat for freedom as our Lithuanian friends," President said.

He said that outstanding figures of national-liberation movement of Georgia were invited to the presidential palace to celebrate Landsbergis. They do not share his political views at all but patriotism and striving for freedom unite them.

Nodar Natadze, Akaki Asatiani, son of Georgian first president Zviad Gamsakhurdia - Konstantin and others were among invitees. It should be noted that presently all of them head opposition parties.

The President thanked Landsbergis for heroism expressed in striving for freedom. Presently, he introduces Georgian colleagues in PACE.  

In his turn, Landsbergis testified his respect for representatives of national-liberation movement, Georgian President and said that striving for freedom and independence are dominant feature of both peoples.
