The Baltic Assembly may discuss the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
"The assembly's president promised to discuss the matter," Azerbaijani MP Ali Masimli told Trend today.
A delegation of Azerbaijani MPs headed by Elton Mammadov and including Elman Mammadov, Mirkazim Kazimov and Ali Masimli, attended the fourth GUAM plenary meeting in Tbilisi Nov. 8-10.
According to Masimli, Azerbaijan's territorial integrity was again discussed with the head of the assembly at the GUAM meeting.
"The head of the Baltic Assembly did not exclude the possibility of including the issue of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity in the agenda of the structure's meeting in November," he said.
Cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Baltic Assembly may be beneficial under the GUAM framework, as well as separately, Masimli said.
"This cooperation can also contribute to the process of resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," he said. "Moreover, cooperation with the assembly greatly enhances Azerbaijan's ability to integrate into Europe. And this, in turn, strengthens security and accelerates the socioeconomic development of the region."
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
