The National Security Ministry detained individuals involved in smuggling drugs this week. Over 64 kilograms of drugs were found, the ministry said.

Azerbaijani citizens Tarlan Mammadov, Hankerem Abbasov, Kheyrulla Abbasov and others smuggled a large batch of drugs from Iran into Azerbaijan for later sales.

In late January, Mammadov visited Iranian Bilasuvar, and met and agreed with an unidentified Iranian citizen to deliver drugs to Azerbaijan. The Iraninan organized the delivery of drugs into the Jafarkhanly village of the Jalilabad region with the help of four compatriots. Their identity is under investigation. Tarlan Mammadov and his fellow villagers Kheyrulla Abbasov and Hankerem Abbasov later received the drugs. Later they traveled to the Salyan region by car, but were detained by ministry employees in the Bilasuvar region. Roughly 30 kilograms of hashish resin and over one kilogram of heroin were found while searching the VAZ-2107 driven by Abbasov.

As a result of another operation, Azerbaijani citizen Anar Mammadov was detained. Large quantities of drugs were found and seized. Mamedov and unidentitied citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran smuggled 31 kilograms of drugs to Azerbaijan.

The Chief Investigation Department filed criminal cases under Article 206.3.2 of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code (Drug Smuggling).

An investigation and search operations are underway.
