Washington hosts Asia Security Conference

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Washington held a conference on the topic "Enhancing Asia's Security Dialogue: The Role of CICA," Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Ilyas Omarov told Trend.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in Washington held a conference on the topic "Enhancing Asia's Security Dialogue: The Role of CICA," Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ilyas Omarov told Trend.

"The conference was attended by representatives of Congress, State Department, Defense Ministry, the business and academic circles, mass media representatives. Kazakhstan and Turkey were represented by the ambassadors of these countries Erlan Idrisov and Namik Tan, who addressed with report on the features of the evolution of the CICA (Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia), " Omarov said.

He said the Turkish Ambassador Namik Tan stressed the efforts of Kazakhstan's chairmanship in this structure, which in his opinion, provided a solid foundation for further strengthening of cooperation and trust in Asia becoming an effective complement to global efforts to achieve peace and stability, development and prosperity.

The Kazakh diplomat Erlan Idrissov urged the U.S. side, which has observer status in the CICA, to intensify its participation in the Asian processes and fully rely on the meeting as an important platform to enhance the U.S. mutual understanding with the Asian countries.

"Outstanding American experts, who attended the conference, highly appreciated the works done within the CICA. They stressed uniqueness of mechanisms for establishing trust between the countries within the CICA Catalogue of CBMs, noting the important role and significant potential for the meeting as an effective framework for regional cooperation", Omarov said.
