Although the developments in Egypt and other Arab countries at first glance look like the people's fight for their rights, Jordanian analyst Saleh Zaytun said the destabilization of the situation serves the aims of the United States, which uses the situation to achieve its goals.

"The United States wants to show the Arab world that together with the Egyptian people it stands for their rights. In fact, they pursue their own goals," Zaytun told Trend over phone from Amman.

The anti-government protests have continued for a month in Egypt. Thousands of people in different cities across the country took to the streets, demanding President Hosni Mubarak's resignation and the parliament's dissolution. At least 300 people have become victims of the unrest, while more than 5,000 have been injured.

Previously, on national television, Mubarak made a statement in which he promised that he would not run for a sixth term as president in the upcoming September elections.

The president's promises did not satisfy several opposition members, and they continue to demand his immediate resignation.

The U.S. president said in an official statement that he supports the Egyptians, and will always support people who demand the ensuring of their rights.

Zaytun said America pursues a dangerous double policy toward the Arab world. Washington is involved in all of the problems of Arab States, he said.

"A stable situation in the Middle East is unprofitable for the United States, so America interferes in the internal affairs of the Arab world," he added.

Zaytun also believes that the creation of a democratic regime in Egypt based on the American system is almost impossible.

"The people do not want and are not ready for democracy in Egypt," he said.

Zaytun said Arab countries should create a governing system different from the American system, which will take into account the demands and needs of the people.

The Egyptian people stand not only for Mubarak's overthrow, but also for a change in the regime and the system as a whole, he said.

"The Egyptian people are against the current regime and foreign policy," Zaytun added.
