A delegation of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan got acquainted with the work of Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas), UNDP press release says. UNDP organized the recent visit of Turkmen MPs to Vilnius.
The group of MPs included representatives from the Mejlis committees on economic and social policy, local representative and self-governance bodies, protection of human rights and freedoms.
Members of the delegation reviewed the Seimas experience of drafting and adopting laws, constituency relations, as well as involvement of the Government and general public, the press release says.
Welcoming members of the delegation, the Seimas Vice Speaker Česlovas Juršėnas and Deputy Secretary General Gedeminas Aleksonis emphasized the importance of development of the inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries.
Issues relating to the large-scale structure of the ombudsman system on human rights, child rights, equal opportunities and consumer rights as well as the system of social insurance and social protection created a platform for an active exchange of opinions and discussions.
Turkmen MPs also reviewed functions of support offices and staff in the relevant constituencies, parliamentary research department, library and internet resources..
It was emphasized that Internet has been extremely important in making the work of Seimas transparent and accessible for the public in Lithuania.
At the meetings with the Chairman of the Central Election Commission, the Head of Unit of Political Parties and Political Campaigns Financial Disclosure and members of the political party "Liberal Movement" the delegation of Turkmenistan enhanced understanding of the electoral system and political landscape in Lithuania.
