Azerbaijani Central Election Commission Chairman: Deputy Powers of Heseyn Abdullayev May be Restored

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. Trend S.Ilhamgizi / Natik Mammadov, the Secretary of the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC), stated that once the appeal of Huseyn Abdullayev is heard, the earlier liquidated deputy powers of Abdullayev may be restored.

The dispute between MPs Fazail Agamali and Huseyn Abdullayev took place during a meeting of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijan Parliament) on 16 March. Due to these actions the Parliament in compliance with an appeal of the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General liquidated the immunity of the deputy and Abdullayev was arrested.

Sabail District Court sentenced Abdullayev to two years imprisonment. In compliance with Azerbaijani legislation, anyone sentenced to a prison term, cannot be an MP of the parliament.

According to Mammadov, the deputy powers of Abdullayev may be restored once the Appeal Court overturns the sentence against Abdullayev.

The deputy position of Abdullayev will be vacant if the appeal is not overturned and the sentence will have to be served.

The Azerbaijani President will determine an election date for the position of deputy in Parliament.
