Azerbaijan detains 13 foreigners for drug smuggling

Thirteen foreigners have been detained in Azerbaijan for drug smuggling over the past three months and a total of about 40 kg of drugs has been seized, the State Commission for Combating Drug Abuse and Drug Trafficking told Trend on Monday.

Thirteen foreigners have been detained in Azerbaijan for drug smuggling over the past three months and a total of about 40 kg of drugs has been seized, the State Commission for Combating Drug Abuse and Drug Trafficking told Trend on Monday.

Eight detainees are Iranian along with two Georgian, two Afghan and one Russian. In total 17 foreigners were detained for drug trafficking in Azerbaijan over three months in 2011, with 82 kg of drugs being seized.

In total, 984 drug related crimes were recorded in January-March of 2012, 302 of them relating to drugs sale, 654 to storage, 23 narcotic plants and four other related crimes. In total about 166 kg of different drugs were seized of which there were 63 kg of marijuana, about 45 kg hashish, over 20 kg opium, about 34 kg of heroin, over six kilogrammes psychotropic substances and about 50 kg of precursor. About three kilogrammes of uncut narcotic plants were destroyed.
