The Azerbaijani Labor and Social Protection Ministry is developing a state program on the social rehabilitation of low-income families, the head of the ministry's department for policy on poverty problems and targets for social assistance, Natig Gasimov, said on Aug.25.
The implementation of the state program is scheduled for 2010-2013, Gasimov added.
The project, which is under development, is based on a high-level of international experience in solving the problem of poverty.
The Guba, Ismayilli and Masalli regions of Azerbaijan and the Narimanov district of Baku have been selected as pilot regions for the project, Gaimov said.
The ministry is involved in improving the new two year state program and it is planned to be completed by late 2009, Gasimov said.
At present, Azerbaijan is carrying out a state program on poverty reduction and sustainable development for 2008-2015.
The state program on poverty reduction and economic development in Azerbaijan for 2003-2005 succeeded in reducing the level of poverty in the country from 46.7 percent in 2002, to 29, 3 percent in 2005, although initially it was planned to achieve a 35 percent reduction. In 2007, the poverty rate dropped to 15.8 percent. The government's aim is to eradicate poverty in Azerbaijan in the period 2010-2015.
