WB to launch consultations on a new strategy

In the end of January the World Bank group of economists will visit Azerbaijan to hold a primary debate with the Government in preparing a new Country Partnership Strategy, designed for the 2011-2014 years, Baku representative office reported

"At present economists who represent different fields of economy, including social and infrastructure fields, are completing the developing the questions which will be discussed during the visit," the representative said

Activity of the current strategy ends June 2010 year

Earlier WB Baku Office Head Gregory Jedzejczak said in 2010 the bank plans to approve five new projects in the fields of road construction (road Baku-Shamakhi), ecology (construction of a deep withdrawal from Hovsan sewage aeration station in the Caspian Sea), education (reform of higher education), and extend the project to improve water and sanitation systems by expanding the list of small towns.

In 2009, the Bank has approved only two projects to repair and upgrade the Hajigabul-Bagramtep roads, and improve the quality of implementing investment projects in key sectors, especially in infrastructure development, totaling $183 million, of which 70 million is allocated for MAP. The bank funded 13 projects totaling $1.251 billion, thus acquiring the strategy budget for four years in two years. The World Bank expressed its readiness to allocate more than $1 billion additional in this context for the next two strategy year (2009-2010).

The WB began cooperation with Azerbaijan in 1992. The WB funded 52 projects totaling $2.7 billion since Azerbaijan entered became a WB member.
