Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism Minister Abulfaz Garayev called on all participants of the tourism industry to be more active in light of the announcement of 2011 as the Year of Tourism in Azerbaijan by President Ilham Aliyev. Garayev voiced this initiative on Tuesday at a business meeting with the representatives of the ministry, travel agencies and managers of hotels, the ministry reported.

Garayev urged the participants of the tourism sector to take regular participation in local and international exhibitions, develop proposals for the development of tourism in the country and bring it into line with international standards, the ministry said.

Garayev also recommended the participants not dwell on the achieved successes and pay special attention to deficiencies. The heads of travel agencies and hotels have discussed the existing problems and made proposals to address them.

The meeting discussed the initial plan of activities under the announcement of 2011 the Year of Tourism, as well as priorities for the tourism sector and other sectors of the ministry.

The participants discussed prospects for the role of tourism in the economy as one of the areas of the non-oil sector.

On Jan. 14, Aliyev declared 2011 the Year of Tourism in Azerbaijan at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers dedicated to the socio-economic development in 2010 and the upcoming challenges in 2011.

"I propose to declare 2011 the Year of Tourism. In 2011, 5 five-star hotels will be opened in Baku; I believe that this event is probably unique in the world. The construction of 4 three-star hotels is also underway in Baku. A big work is carried out in the direction of the hotel business in the region's tourism development in Azerbaijan - already a reality," he said.

The Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism Ministry reported that there are 207 travel agencies and 295 hotels and hotel-type facilities in the country.
