Azerbaijan Railways transported 4.8 million passengers in 2010, compared to about 6.23 million in 2009, a company source said on Tuesday.

"There was a decrease in passenger traffic in 2010. The railway had transported over 6.2 million passengers in 2009 and this figure amounted to only 4.802 million in 2010," the source said.

The source stressed that the decline in passenger traffic is linked with the increasing incidence of explosions on the railway in Dagestan.

Another factor that influenced the volume of passenger traffic is the lack of wagons.

"However, this issue is reflected in the Azerbaijani Railroads Development Program and will be resolved," the source said.

According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee, the Azerbaijani transport sector transported 196.3 million tons of cargo and 1.4 billion people in 2010.
