Armenia occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory, that's why, direct and transit cargo transportation will not be permitted from Azerbaijan to Armenia, Javid Gurbanov, the chairman of Azerbaijani Railways CJSC, said.
Gurbanov made this statement at a meeting of the 12th Assembly of the Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (OTİF) in Bern, Azerbaijani Railways said Sept. 29.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
Gurbanov informed about the reforms conducted in the company.
Azerbaijan joined the KOTİF convention in April 2015 and this law was ratified by the Azerbaijani parliament.
Gurbanov also stressed the active participation of Azerbaijan in the transport corridor linking Europe with Asia.
He informed the participants about the large-scale work on the railways, a project of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and an increase in the transit potential of Azerbaijan as a result of the project implementation.
