Mohammad Pourkazemi, the head of Iranian Fisheries Science Research Institutes, said Iran and Italy are cooperating to raise oysters in the southern province of Hormozgan.

“Iran’s Fisheries Science Research Institute is pursuing new policies to produce 10 tons of oysters in Hormozgan in cooperation of Italian experts by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21),” Pourkazemi told MANA news agency on September 16.

We are currently carrying initial studies to produce oysters as soon as possible, which is a priority for the institute, he added.

“To that end, we have organized training workshops for producers in the city of Bandar Abbas with the help of Italian experts,” he said.

Italian experts have also visited the Qeshm island in the Persian Gulf to explore opportunities there and decide to implement the oyster farming project.

Oyster farming is an aquaculture (or mariculture) practice in which oysters are raised for human consumption. Oyster farming was practiced by the ancient Romans as early as the 1st century BC on the Italian peninsula and later in Britain for export to Rome. The French oyster industry has relied on aquacultured oysters since the late 18th century.
