BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 19

By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

Iran has the potential to annually produce a total of 2,800 railcars and locomotives, the country's Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Reza Rahmani said at a meeting with Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami, Trend reports via IRNA.

Rahmani said that over the next 10 years, Iran needs to produce and repair a total of more than 40,000 railcars and locomotives.

The Iranian minister added that orders for the production of railcars and locomotives in industrial sectors in the country have doubled over the past year.

Rahmani said that the cooperation is at a high level between the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade and the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development on developing mines and the related infrastructure, upgrading freight and passenger vehicles, railways, as well as provision of road laying equipment by domestic industry facilities.

In turn, Mohammad Eslami said that repair and renovation of railway transportation equipment through domestic potential is of particular importance.

Eslami noted that the importance of this issue has increased several times with the rise in gasoline prices in Iran.

The minister added that the work is underway to create the necessary infrastructure in Iran’s mining sector, including laying railway lines to mines.

Over the past two days, there have been a number of peaceful protests over the rise in gasoline prices in Iran. In some cases, the protests resulted in riots. On Nov. 15, the price of gasoline sold within quotas in Iran rose by 10,000 rials (about 23 cent) to 15,000 rials (about 35 cent) per liter and the price of freely sold gasoline grew to 30,000 rials (about 71 cent) per liter.
