Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan to modernize checkpoints at countries' borders

Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan agreed on construction of a new bridge and a reconstruction of existing bridge between Karasu (Kazakhstan) and Ak-Tilek (Kyrgyzstan) checkpoints, Trend reports with reference to the press office of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development.

The signing of a corresponding agreement took place within the framework of state visit of Kazakhstan’s President Kassym Jomart Tokayev to Kyrgyzstan on November 27, 2019.

Thus, according to the agreement, modernization of the checkpoint will begin in 2020 with development of feasibility study on reconstruction of a bridge over Chu River.

“Within the framework of the project, the number of lanes for cargo and passenger cars will be increased, as well as pedestrian crossings on both sides of the river will be constructed. Transport infrastructure of the Karasu checkpoint, including reconstruction of leads, arrangement pavements and lighting. Implementation of the project will double the capacity of Karasu checkpoint, which will lead to trade turnover growth between countries and create favorable conditions for citizens. Currently Karasu capacity is about 400,000 cars and 850,000 people. Modernization will be finished in 2021,” the report said.

Currently there are seven border checkpoints operating between countries. Next year, Besagash checkpoint will resume its work and Kegen checkpoint’s operating time will be increased. Thus, the border between two countries will be permitted for crossing in eight checkpoints.

Kazakhstan's side is to reconstruct Korday checkpoint. The contractor has already been selected. The modernization is to be finished in 2020 following which the capacity of Korday checkpoint will be nine million people and 900,000 cars a year.
