Review of Georgian agriculture sector

In 2019, agriculture in Georgia accounted for 7.2 percent of GDP, production amounted to 4.7 billion lari ($1.4 billion) which amounted to $1.6 billion as of December 31, 2019, Trend reports via Georgian media.

Of which, crop production accounts for 43 percent, animal breeding - 50 percent, agricultural services - 7 percent.

Revenues received from selling agricultural products make only 5.5 percent of the total income of the population - an average of 60 lari ($17.90) per month per rural resident.

In 2016-2019, the area of cultivated land decreased from 240,000 to 203,000 hectares despite an increase in production. Of which, 72,600 hectares accounted for Kakheti.

The export of agricultural products from Georgia amounted to $1 billion in 2019 that is 110 times less than in Holland, where the agricultural sector accounts for only 1.7 percent of the country's GDP. For comparison, in Georgia the agricultural sector employs 38 percent of the population, while in the Netherlands - only 2 percent.

Wine accounts for $223 million of the agricultural products for export, alcoholic beverages - $127 million, nuts - $67 million, and the rest for fruits and vegetables.
