Georgia imports significant volume of wheat from US

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.22

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

The ship Ocean Grand delivered 14,000 metric tons of high-quality US wheat to the Port of Poti as part of the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food for Progress program, Trend reports via Georgian media.

This shipment, the first of three in the coming month, will be available for private sector usage via commercial sales on the Georgian market.

The proceeds of the sales will be invested into a USDA agricultural development program to improve Georgian farmers’ and processors’ productivity and efficiency and improve food safety and quality along Georgia’s dairy and beef value chains. Food for Progress reaffirms the US commitment to supporting Georgia through expert partnerships that build a sustainable, diverse economy.

According to the Georgian Flour Producers Association, 30,000 tons of wheat will be imported from the US late this year, Trend reports via Georgian media.

The second ship loaded with American wheat is planned to enter Georgia on December 25.

"We want to note that the import of 30,000 tons of American wheat is very timely and important for our country, especially when there is a very difficult situation on the regional market and accordingly, the availability of wheat will be limited by a number of countries.
