Iran seeks to boost attracting more investment in fishery sector

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 23. Iran’s fishery sector is set to receive a boost of 150 trillion rials (about $3.57 billion) in investment by the end of the current Iranian year (March 19, 2024), Iranian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jihad and the Chairman of Iran Fisheries Organization Hossein Hosseini said, Trend reports.

Hosseini stated that the private sector would contribute more than 80 percent of this investment, which would be allocated to fish farming, catching, and processing activities.

The deputy minister also said that the previous Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023) saw 118 trillion rials (about $2.8 billion) of investment in the fishery sector in Iran.

On average, Iran produces more than 1.25 million tons of fish per year, with about 700,000 tons from fishing and more than 550,000 tons from aquaculture.

Currently, 347 cooperatives are involved in fishing in the north and south of the country. There are 136,000 fishermen working in the north and south of Iran. About 9,500 of them fish in the Caspian Sea in the north of the country, while the rest fish in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in the south of the country.
