By implementing projects under the Kyoto Protocol's "Clean Development Mechanism," the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (Socar) will decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 6.7 million tons, Socar's Ecology Department said.
Gas emissions will decrease by 6.5 million tons by using associated gas at the Siyazanneft and Gum Adasi sections of the oil and gas production unit (OGPU) and several operating companies.
If the stoves at two Socar OGPUs are improved and burn on gas as opposed to mazut, gas emissions will drop 220,000 tons.
The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997 and targets reducing gas emissions to a level that cannot influence climate change. Azerbaijan ratified the protocol in 2000.
Based on a decree by Socar's president on April 24, gas sources were analyzed at Socar and several operating companies functioning in line with the PSA contract. A database was created and proposals were made for potential projects under the "Clean Development Mechanism."
One proposal was submitted to the "Clean Development Mechanism" board for consideration. Other proposals are being reviewed. Measures are underway to search the relevant partners.
In 2007, Socar emitted roughly 8.5 million tons of gas causing the greenhouse effect.
Some 1.9 million tons of this volume was due to carbonic acid; the rest - to methane. Methane is emitted in associated gas at the fields of the May 28 and Neft Dashlari OGPUs in Azerbaijan.
