Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec.30 / Trend , E.Ismayilov /

SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) thoroughly works out and expounds three-dimensional (3D) geophysical data received as a result of researches in Kalmaz underground gas storage owing to strategic importance of this facility, SOCAR said today.

3D research was conducted to create three-dimensional model of a gas storage and estimate its possible expansion. The company will finish working out and expounding the data in autumn 2010.

"According to the plan, operations must be finished in September 2010. But they can be completed earlier. Kalmaz gas storage is a state facility. So, we must not hurry," the source said.

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) Geology and Geophysics Department said earlier the seismic data obtained from the explored area, which is characterized by complex surface and deep seismographic and geological conditions, was assessed as satisfactory.

There are two underground gas storages in Azerbaijan, including Garadagh with active capacity of 500,000 million tons and Kalmaz with active capacity of 1.1-1.2 billion cubic meters of gas.

Roughly 1.95 billion cubic meters of gas was pumped into the underground storages in 2009.

It is planned to complete construction of new compressor stations, pipelines and repair of wells within the first phase of expansion of Garadagh gas storage. It is planned to bring its active capacity up to 1.4 billion cubic meters. This index will hit 2.3 billion cubic meters within the second phase.

About 3 billion cubic meters of gas will be pumped into the underground storages soon. The number can increase up to 5 billion cubic meters at the third phase of the project.
