The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) plans to create an automated SCADA system using modern technology to run processes on major gas-main pipelines in Azerbaijan, a source in SOCAR told Trend on Friday.
He said the creation of a new system anticipates work on laying and restoring fibre-optical cables will make it possible to ensure control over the country's major gas-main pipelines.
"Currently this issue is on agenda, but we will be able to start the process of creating an integrated system of remote control only after completing the process of reconstruction and adjusting the country's gas distribution system itself," the source said.
He said a system of remote control is essential for visual observation on gas-main pipelines, in particular injection and extraction of gas from underground gas storages and for ensuring safety of the system itself.
"That's why currently active work aimed at the modernisation and restoration of the gas-distribution system and firstly, of gas-main pipelines is underway," the source said.
SOCAR's Azerigaz production association is engaged in gas transportation and sales in Azerbaijan.
