The Botaş state pipeline company increased the price of gas for the country's distribution stations up to 38 per cent, the Zaman newspaper reported on Thursday.
The new prices will be about 1400 - 1420 lira per thousand cubic meters compared to 1013-1040 lira before the price increase.
Botaş's profit from gas distribution amounted to 25.9 billion lira in 2011. The company regulates 90 per cent of the gas distribution market in Turkey. Last year the company sold 39.4 billion cubic meters of gas, 18.9 billion cubic meters of which accounted for the energy sector and 10.1 billion cubic meters for the housing sector.
Turkey imports its entire volume of consumed gas. Russia ranks first among countries exporting gas to Turkey. This is followed by Iran and Azerbaijan.
