Capacity of Azerbaijani power supply surpasses demand by a quarter

According to a government report in 2012 submitted to parliament, the capacity of the power supply system of Azerbaijan allows the production of 22 - 24 billion KWh of electricity annually which exceeds the maximum demand of the country by 25 present.

The power comprising 6275 MW, also allows the export of two billion KWh of electricity per year.

The amount of electricity in Azerbaijan has reached 2200 KWh per capita which is comparable with the level of European countries.

A total of 2.27 billion AZN credits have been attracted to the development of the power production industry under a state guarantee. The total amount of credits attracted to this sector in 2012 comprised 254.4 billion AZN.

Bakielectricshebeke and Azerenergy joint stock companies engaged in power production and distribution in Baku and the rest of Azerbaijan in the order listed have received 141.7 and 90 million AZN from the state budget respectively, for the purpose of upgrading their electricity lines and substations.

Electric power is produced at 22 plants. 13 of which are thermal power stations and nine are hydropower stations producing 5252 MW and 1023 MW, respectively.

At least 21.63 billion KWh of electric power was produced in the country in 2012 in comparison with 20.1 billion in 2011.

The official currency rate on March 6 constitutes 0.7850 AZN/USD.
