The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) applied to the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation of the United Arab Emirates for a licence to construct two new nuclear power plants (NPP) in Abu Dhabi, Elaph newspaper announced on Wednesday.
These will become the third and fourth NPPs in the country with a capacity of 1400 MW each. The Emirates is going to construct them in the Barakah district of the capital Abu Dhabi.
Previously in June 2012, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation gave licenses to ENEC for construction of the first two NPPs.
It is expected that the UAE will receive the first energy from the nuclear power plants in 2017.
Construction of the first one will be started by the Korean KEPCO Company in the first half of this year.
It is estimated that the construction of NPPs will cost $20 billion, but there is a possibility of a 70 per cent rise in the project cost.
