By 2035, the US and China will be producing about 85 percent of shale gas in the world, says Vladimir Drebentsov, BP's senior economist for CIS and Russia.

He made the remarks Oct. 14 in Baku during the presentation of a statistical analysis on the global energy sector for 2015 and the forecasts for 2035.

Drebentsov noted that according to BP's forecasts, by that time, the shale gas won't be extracted in all other regions, where there are such energy resources.

Meanwhile, as he said, the US gas to be produced from shale deposits, will go to the world markets, including in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

"The LNG deliveries will overtake the transit of natural gas through gas pipelines by 2035," Drebentsov further said.

He noted that according to BP's calculations, the US will be able to export up to 140 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

"For comparison, this is roughly equal to today's gas supplies from Russia to Europe," he said, noting that Russia is the largest supplier of gas to Europe, meeting 30 percent of its needs.

At the same time, Drebentsov believes that the competition between gas suppliers will further grow.

LNG is natural gas, transferred to the liquid form at temperatures below the critical value.

During liquefaction, the volume of gas reduces by 600 times, and this is the main advantage of LNG.

This means that LNG has three times more gas capacity than the same volume of compressed natural gas (CNG).
