Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, addressing a government meeting, stressed the need for further continuation of the work on the Galkynysh gas field, the Turkmen State News Agency (TDH) reported March 30.

The head of state noted that an important measure in fulfilling the forthcoming tasks is to attract foreign investments to the industry. "All conditions have been created in the country in this regard," the president said.

The reserves of Galkynysh, in conjunction with nearby deposits, are estimated at 27.4 trillion cubic meters.

Galkynysh, the second biggest gas field in the world (after South Pars in the Persian Gulf), will be a resource base for the TAPI.

In July 2017, it was reported that the third stage of development of Galkynysh will be launched in the near future. The third stage is expected to increase production capacity by another 33 billion cubic meters of commercial gas per year with the expectation of deliveries to South Asia.

Turkmenistan holds the fourth largest natural gas reserves in the world after Iran, Russia and Qatar, according to a report by BP. Presently, the country has the opportunity to export it to China and Iran with the prospects of increasing supplies.
