Uzbekistan and Russia can sign a contract to build a nuclear power plant in Central Asian country before the end of 2019, Trend reports via Uzbek media.

"We have a approved schedule, in accordance with which, the EPC contract will be signed before the end of this year," General Director of the Agency for the Development of Nuclear Energy of Uzbekistan Jurabek Mirzamamudov said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a press conference in Tashkent on May 2 said that the site for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan with the participation of the Russian Federation had already been determined following the results of bilateral talks.

The joint project of the Uzbek side and Rosatom involves the construction of a nuclear power plant, consisting of two modern units with a capacity of 1.2 GW each.

It is planned to launch this strategic power facility until 2028. The nuclear power plant will not only provide Uzbekistan with uninterrupted power, but also send for export part of the electricity produced.
