BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 10. The UN Climate Convention aims to stabilize the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic impacts on the Earth's climate system, and this is a very complex, problematic, and long process, head of the Environment and Climate Division of the UN Special Group of the UN Global Compact project, Fernando Castellanos said, Trend reports.

He made the remark during the conference of the UN Office in Baku and Pasha Holding, "29 climate conversations: The Road to COP29".

"If the world fails to keep a cap on global temperature rise at 1.5°C, it faces a deadly 2.8°C warming. To maintain a climate-safe future, global emissions must be cut in half this decade, which means abandoning coal mining and expanding oil and gas exploration," the UN expert believes.

At the same time, he noted that "global emissions in the current decade could increase by almost 9 percent, as many governments plan to produce about 110 percent more fossil fuels by 2030 than are needed to keep warming limited to 1.5°C".

"To avoid catastrophic consequences and increase the resilience of communities to the increasingly severe impacts of climate change, especially in developing countries, unprecedented investment in renewable energy infrastructure is needed, as well as a significant increase in financing for adapting economies to the green transition," Castellanos believes.

According to him, companies around the world should introduce standards and reporting on possible greenhouse gas emissions and interact more with government agencies and specialized non-governmental organizations.

"Private holdings and companies should take concrete actions and demonstrate contribution to the implementation of National Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Plans (NDC) and measurable contribution to achieving the goals of the Paris "Climate Agreement and the UN Global Framework for Biodiversity and Sustainable evelopment," the UN expert stressed.

To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will be held in Baku on November 11–24.
